    Cellulitis

Cellulitis is an acute inflammation of the connective tissue of the skin, caused by a bacterial infection.

The word cellulitis literally means inflammation of the cells. It generally indicates an acute spreading infection of the dermis and subcutaneous tissues resulting in pain, swelling, irritation, redness, fatigue, fever and warmth. A tight glossy appearance can result. Sudden onset and rapid spread with in defined borders are common.

The skin normally has many types of bacteria living on it, but intact skin is an effective barrier that keeps these bacteria from entering and growing within the body. When there is a break in the skin, however, bacteria can enter the body and grow there, causing infection and inflammation.

Cellulitis is most common on the lower legs and the arms or hands. People with fungal infections of the feet, who have skin cracks in the spaces between the toes, may have recurring cellulitis.

    Risk factors for cellulitis include:
  • Insect bites, animal bite, or human bite.
  • Injury or trauma with a skin wound.
  • History of peripheral vascular disease.
  • Diabetes and related ulcers.
  • Cracks or peeling skin between the toes.
  • Chronic steroid use or immuno-depressive medications.

Taking care of yourself at home
Cellulitis treatment may require hospitalization if it is severe enough to warrant intravenous antibiotics and close observation. At other times, treatment with oral and topical herbal mixes can control the outbreak. Elevate the infected area, usually higher than the heart, to minimize pain, drainage and swelling. Rest until symptoms improve to assist infection fighting.

    Reduce the risk of transmission
Cellulitis is spread by skin-to-skin contact or by touching infected surfaces. Suggestions on how to reduce the risk of transmission in your household include: Wash your hands often, cover the wound with a gauze dressing , wash your bed linen, towels and clothing separately from those belonging to other family members while the infection is healing.
