Herbal Help for Humans and their Companions

Elusive Happiness

When you wake up in the morning do you say to yourself, "Yes, I'm content, I'm happy."

DR STEPHEN JUAN: said " Happiness is very good for you, it makes you live longer, puts a smile on your face, makes you get through every day and it's a great aphrodisiac as well "

Deacon University put that question to more than 22,000 of us and made a map of Australia's wellbeing. Our cities fared poorly, and the results showed that the road to happiness leads straight out of town. And the cheeriest place of all? Well, where, where else but Queensland? It's official — Hervey Bay is the happiest place in Australia, yet it's also one of the country's poorest electorates. It's got high unemployment, it's five hours north of the nearest "big smoke", Brisbane, but in satisfaction with standards of living, health, relationships and safety, it's better than anywhere else.

Our smaller country towns have a greater sense of community, and humans need community for support. The medical evidence shows that people who survive heart attacks and cancer are the people who are socially connected, not the people who live alone, and people who are the happiest are people who are socially connected.

You can't buy happiness in a book. Happiness can't be bought. Happiness can't be given to you. Happiness has got be earned and happiness has got to be inside.

This week we feature:-

Canine - "The Miracle Of Ben: Surviving Seizures, Pancreatitis and IBS"

Ben Ben started having major digestive problems nearly 3 years ago, which was a few months before Jess died (she was terminally ill at the time). He was on a raw diet and couldn't digest proteins. I had my hands full with Jess and didn't get onto his problem as early as I should have. After Jess died, Ben was so depressed and I thought he was going to die too. He had what I now know to be a severe attack of pancreatitis after eating half a marrow bone (with the marrow scraped out).

Over the next few months, I couldn't find any food that was suitable and he wouldn't eat much at all. The vet didn't know what was wrong and suggested commercial foods. Tiger joined us a couple of months later, but it wasn't smooth sailing. Ben had a major pancreatitis attack the following March and was diagnosed properly and hospitalised. He was also diagnosed with IBD.

The vets did everything within their knowledge to treat him - fluids most days and steroid injections and antibiotics for a couple of months - but he was losing weight at an alarming rate and went from 39 kgs to 24 kgs and was just about a skeleton. The vet gave us the option of having him put to sleep a couple of times, but I had strong feelings that Ben wanted to live. When he was at his lowest ebb, I said to him that there would be no more drugs or going to the vet, but if he could fight, then I would help him. It was very risky to come off steroids "cold turkey", but we had no option.

I contacted Robert, who suggested a hair analysis and said to start him on the Blood Poisoning mix, which I had at home until he was able to do the analysis. Once that was done, Robert sent the Conditioning Mix and said to discontinue the Blood Poisoning mix. The Hair Analysis showed that Ben was indeed a very sick dog and a follow up analysis was recommended a month later. It showed that Ben was improving. It took a long time to find a protein food that was suitable and I made a lot of mistakes along the way, but it was imperative to get Ben eating regularly again.

It was around about this time that Ben's seizures started. They were severe and regular and some lasted about 15 minutes, usually at night (I timed them). Robert sent Ben the Epilepsy Mixes - one for daily use and the other after episodes for a few days. I noticed Ben would overheat badly when he seized. Eventually we got the seizures under control and I thought he would be ok and stopped the mix, but Ben seized two weeks later in January 2005. I've kept Ben on the mix since then and he hasn't seized - so to date, that's 17 months seizure free. During the healing period, Ben's heart beat was a bit irregular and Robert put him on the Heart Tonic for a few months. It nourished his heart and he hasn't had any further problems.

I eventually found that poached fish and mushed sweet potato with a probiotic suited his digestive system and I keep him on that every day. He has put most of his weight back on and maintained it. The healing process was slow and today he looks really well and has a lot of energy. I look at him and the tears well up in my eyes when I think of how brave he was and how far he's come today.

A big thanks to Robert and his staff for all their help, especially in the early days of Ben's recovery.

Trish

Equine - Lice

Two species of lice can infest horses, causing skin irritation, severe scratching and loss of condition. Incidence peaks in late winter and spring, recurring annually once lice become established in a stable or paddock.

Long winter coats and lack of grooming and rugging make ideal breeding conditions for lice.

Lice are spread via other infested horses, rugs, grooming gear, harness, or rubbing on trees, rails etc. where winter haircoat containing lice or eggs has been deposited. Lice can only live off the horse's body for a few days. Horses in poor condition are more susceptible to the effects of lice.

My recommended treatment of lice:-

  • Thoroughly wash horse with an insecticidal product such as advised by your vet .
  • Look at your drenching history . Usually only drench at beginning of Autumn & Spring. Any more than this creates an immunity deficiency making your horse more susceptible to parasites.
  • Do not use pour-on lousicides formulated for cattle or sheep on horses, as severe skin reaction and hair loss my result
Repeat Wash treatment in 7 - 10 days to break the lifecycle Treat grooming gear, harness and rugs at the same time Avoid using contaminated equipment or rugs for 14 days, as lice can only survive off a horse for a few days Wash rugs and hang inside out over a fence in sunlight for 10 - 14 days If possible where paddocked horses are infested, shift them out of the infected paddock for 14 days to starve active lice on trees and rails.

    Boost the immune system with the following Herbal remedies & tonics;

You can place the teas in the same 1 litre of water halve & use to wet down morning & afternoon feeds. 1 cup of Crushed White millet & linseed mixed dry or made into a porridge & halved feed am & pm.To repair tissue damage & promote healthy skin.

Human - Hair Health and Loss as Women Age

  • Menopause and hormonal changes are reflected in our hair condition.

  • Be gentle with your hair when wet as it is more elastic and can break more easily.

  • Use a good soft brush with round bristles.

  • massage your scalp regularly possibly with apple cider vinegar and sage to stimulate growth or use stinging nettle tea.

  • Use natural hair care products-suphate free so as not to strip hair of natural oils.

  • Internally the herbs Licorice helps prevent loss and Silica makes it strong and shiny.

  • Biotin is linked to hair loss-increase by eating brown rice, peas lentils, oats, walnuts and sunflower seeds.

  • Reduce sugar as it is highly acidic and destroys B vitamins and avoid raw eggs which stop biotin being absorbed.

  • Wakame promotes gloss and prevents loss.

  • Mulberries prevent both greying and hair loss as they stimulate the liver and kidneys.

  • Zinc and Kelp are essential for growth and strength.

Our busy crazy lives mean that we are increasingly becoming more and more stressed, and depending on what type of person we are we can carry this tension in our scalp. This can result in the starvation of individual hair follicles and resultant hair loss.

Frequently, these patients suffer from poorer circulation generally, and carry their stresses in the neck and shoulders. Additional stress can further reduce the oxygen supply to certain areas of the scalp and hair loss occurs in those patches.

My standard Circulatory Shock mix of herbs includes:- Maritime Pine Bark, Sage, Nettle, Rue, Prickly Ash, Vervain, Ginseng, Rosemary and Rosehips, as well as the Bach Flower Remedy Crab Apple.

In addition, I normally recommend massage with a little Rosemary Oil to improve scalp circulation and health. You should be aware however, that any hair follicles that are already damaged will not recover, and massage initially will seem to cause more hair loss:

    Home Remedies - Wheat Grass

    Wheatgrass
Some say wheat grass is almost like a blood transfusion that it is a wonderful cleanser and rejuvenator which means it helps your body to throw out toxins that have built up over the years and helps it replace old dead cells with new cells. These are certainly factors that cause disease in our bodies and so wheat grass deserves more study.

Below I have given you a pocket history of wheat grass -fascinating ! I would be interested to hear of your own experiences with wheat grass.

During the early 1900's a man named Edmund Bordeaux Szekely discovered an ancient biblical manuscript which he subsequently translated. It was a remarkable discovery and Szekely was so enthralled with the translation that he formed a society he called the Biogenic Society to promulgate the teaching of this new (old) way of eating. He began publishing the manuscripts in the form of little books, which he sold very inexpensively because he felt that the world needed the message. He called the books The Essene Gospel of Peace. The Essenes were a very righteous people who lived near the Dead Sea during the time of Jesus Christ. Christ actually taught them the laws of health during that time. The main teaching of Essene Book I is: Don't kill your food by cooking it. The main teaching of Essene Book IV is : all grasses are good for man and wheatgrass is the perfect food for man. These little books can be purchased at any health food store.

In the 1940's a man by the name of Charles Kettering (former Chairman of the Board of General Motors) donated money for the study of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll was studied intensively by medical doctors using FDA required standards i.e. double blind studies, etc. (There are currently over 40 articles written up in medical journals about the healing effects of chlorophyll.) These medical doctors found that chlorophyll was a great healer .

Sometime during the 1940's a lady by the name of Ann Wigmore healed herself of a life threatening condition from the weeds she found in vacant lots in Boston. (See "Why Suffer" by Ann Wigmore.) She began a study of natural healing modalities - and with the help of a friend, Dr. Earp Thomas, she found that there are 4700 varieties of grass in the world and all are good for man. With the help of her pets, she arrived at the conclusion that wheatgrass was the best - or the medicinal grass. She started an institute in Boston (Ann Wigmore Institute) and since then has taught people from all over the world about the grasses and the living food healing program—and helped them get well from some very serious diseases. She has written over 35 books telling about wheatgrass and living foods.

    Reader Feed Back

    Dear Robert,
A friend of mine had a horse with a sarcoid on it's side right where the saddle would go. It was quite large and nasty, after spending over $2000 on various treatments the sarcoid kept growing back.

A friend said to put vegemite on it!! Anything was worth a try. After a short time the sarcoid dissapeared and grew back with pink skin.

Love to here your coments on this.
    Regards Fiona

    Robert Replied :

    Dear Fiona,
Sarcoids are a little like human childhood warts and seem to have a mind of their own and only go away when they are ready.

Therefore all sorts of things seem to fail and all sorts seem to succeed and it is often affected by timing and not a concrete thing.

I have therefore developed the most reliable herbal approach I can and I recommend you work with this until it succeeds, as probably happened in the Vegemite case, with a dose of topical vitamin B. Try my treatments and good luck with your timing.

    Yours truly,

    Thankyou Jasmine

Andrea replied about the Kibble question. "The best suggestion for the kibble is to read the labels. Brands are sometimes not in the same area. Here in California, I use either INNOVA or PINNACLE. Your vet's office may carry a special kind or know of a good brand in your area. The web is wonderful for searching for brands. Grains are to be avoided, corn, soy, "cereals" etc.. Same with bisquits. Your dogs and cats will be happier too!! "

    Thankyou Andrea
