Robert McDowell's Herbal Treatments 15 October 2006 Herbal Help for Humans and their CompanionsHow to live a Happy and Rewarding Life - Author unknownThis week we feature:-
Feline - Acne Cats have small sebaceous glands associated with hair follicles and larger sebaceous glands on the head and tail. These glands secrete oils. It is when these glands are overactive that cats can get what is known as cat acne. In cases of acne the pores and hair follicles near the glands can become clogged with black sebaceous material, and form what is known as comedones. In the more severe cases these pores and follicles can get infected, irritated, and swollen. Cat acne is most commonly seen on the chin and this acne will look like the cat has black dirt on the chin that won't wash off. Symptoms may include red swollen pores or black clogged pores. Some cats seem to get acne in conjunction with an allergic reaction to plastic food bowls. If you suspect this you may want to switch to metallic bowls and see if that clears the acne up. I recommend changing to a completely raw diet if not already and swap to non plastic food & water bowl. Rub on the acne Castor oil once daily which will stimulate the clogged pores to pop! Leave on for 12 hours. Then wash the area with a combination of cool chamomile tea, organic cider vinegar & colloidal silver in equal amounts. All these products are available at the health food store. The castor oil can be obtained from your chemist. Castor oil is a purgative so don't slap on a large amount just a little bit & rub in well. If this does not clear the problem then the condition can be treated with the blood cleanser: http://www.herbal-treatments.com/cat_blood_poisoning.html & topically an Antiseptic Styptic. Canine - Fatty Tumours / Lipomas A new product description soon to be on our websites. Fatty tumours or Lipomas may be large or small and can occur anywhere, but are most commonly found in the armpit, side, and abdominal area. Fatty tumours can grow to enormous sizes and because of this sometimes have to be removed. A Lipoma is a benign fatty lump. They are very common in older, middle-aged dogs. Overweight female dogs are especially prone to developing Lipomas. Certain dog breeds may be at risk, including, but not limited to: Doberman Pinschers, Schnauzers (miniatures), Labrador Retrievers, and mixed breeds. They can also appear in cats and horses, but not as often. Lipomas are usually just under the skin, but they can be locally invasive, meaning they are meshed with muscle or connective tissue. Lipomas can also have additional blood or connective tissue as part of the growth. These growths can appear anywhere on the body, but they are most frequently located on the belly (mid-chest and down) and upper legs. Our support mix includes Fenugreek, Agrimony, Dandelion, Violet Leaves, Garlic, Rosehips and Blue Flag as well as the Bach Flowers Wild Rose and Scleranthus. This combination rebalances the metabolism of fats, energises the lymphatic system and assists circulation. Equine - Stomach Ulcers Chamomile Tea, which is found at the following link: http://www.herbal-treatments.com/horse_chamomile_flowers.html The chamomile tea is a great 'soother' and relaxer. It is make it up with 4 dessert spoons of the flowers to 1 litre mls of hot water and allow to cool, and mix 500 mls with AM feed and the rest in the PM feed (flowers an all) (you can adjust the liquid content of this tea according to how often you feed your horse. This is given in conjunction with Slipper Elm Bark Powder, which is found at: http://www.herbal-treatments.com/horse_slippery_elm_bark_powder.html The slippery elm powder provides a coating to the lining of the gut and the intestines. The dosage is 1/3 cup powder mixed into a paste with a quantity of cold Chamomile Tea. This paste is given directly or added to the horses feed or bran mash. We recommend this course for at least 12 weeks. Human - Hay Fever/Allergic Rhinitis http://www.herbal-treatments.com.au/herbs_allergic_rhinitis.html Allergies are simply an immune system over-reaction. If I were exposed to tear gas, I would expect to cough and sneeze and have sore and runny eyes. My immune system is at work doing its best to protect me from this strongly irritant gas. If all this happens in the springtime when a certain plant pollen is in the air, it is because my immunity is wrongly identifying the pollen as if it is really dangerous. It is over-sensitive. This over-sensitivity can be triggered after an illness, accident, stress or exposure to something which left the immunity hyper-reactive. My allergy treatments work to nourish and calm down this over-reactivity and to heal any damage from the allergic reaction to tissues in the body which have been affected. Home Remedies - Apple Cider Vinegar and Hayfever This ailment is marked by watery eyes, sneezing and running nose, in other words there is an excess of fluid which the body is drastically trying to offload. For an effective relief, honey and cider vinegar should be utilized which will bring excellent results. A tablespoonful of honey should be taken after each meal for approximately a fortnight before the onset of the hay-fever season. The ordinary dosage of cider vinegar and honey should then be taken viz: two teaspoons of cider vinegar and two of honey in a glass of water, three times a day. This dosage should be maintained during the entire hay-fever season. Regardless, start your day with 1 tablespoon of it every morning with a dessertspoon of honey and hot water. Dogs Eating Dirt Rosalind asked, I've had my border collies on many of your herbal remedies with great success. I have a question for you that I can't seem to get a conclusive answer anywhere. Why do dogs eat dirt? In your experience, is it something lacking in their diet? I ask this because a number of my dogs eat dirt regularly. Regards Robert Replied Dear Rosalind, Normally they are looking for trace material which can either be elements or bacteria to aid with their digestion. A small amount of powdered kelp will normally sort out exotic mineral needs. Burying a bone and eating it later will normally sort out the bacterial problems in our too clean world. Robert.
