Robert McDowell's Herbal Treatments 12 August 2007 Herbal Help for Humans and their CompanionsBe more Aware! Paying attention to all things and living a more aware lifestyle will help prevent getting many illnesses. Watching over yourself and making sure you are making healthy decisions, and reducing exposure to risk factors will make a huge difference in your life. Eat, drink, think, live and love consciously. This week we feature:-
Feline - Liver and Pancreatic Cancer Cancers affecting the liver and/or pancreas are fortunately not very common in cats. These tumours can cause jaundice (due to obstruction to the flow of bile), depression, weight loss, vomiting and distension of the abdomen. I prepare a specific herbal Liver Cancer Support mixture of concentrated extracts of: Bladderack, Buchu, Comfrey, Dandelion, Golden Seal, Parsley, Rosehips, Slippery Elm and St Mary's Thistle along with appropriate Bach Flower Remedies. This mix is given in conjunction with my Super Antioxidant which is derived from the Maritime Pine and together they have the potential to slow down and reverse the development of Liver Cancer bringing it into remission. This Cancer Support mix can be used in conjunction with other alternative medicines also, or with orthodox medical treatments including radio and chemo therapy. The important distinction between my herbal treatment and orthodox medicine is that here I am aiming to reverse the underlying processes which allowed the cancer to develop in the first place. This is distinct from the aim of removing, or otherwise destroying cancerous cells directly once the process of cancer has begun. http://www.herbal-treatments.com/cat_maritime_pine_bark_extract_pycnogenol.html Canine - Cushings With Cushing you need to do more than address the diet, without supporting the underlying metabolic imbalances most folk find themselves chasing their tails as it were. Cushing's Disease, more properly known as Hyperadrenocorticism, is a disease state caused by chronic excess levels of glucocorticoid (a type of steroid). Causes can include pituitary and adrenal gland tumours, and chronic injections of steroids. About 85% of all cases are due to tumours of the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain. Signs of the disease are distended abdomen, thinning skin, loss of hair evenly over the body with dry hair, darkening of the skin, the wasting away of muscle tissue and, in males, the shrinking of the testicles. Other signs are increased thirst and water consumption, and chronic urinary tract infections. Breathing may be affected with an increase in panting. Affected animals may develop diabetes mellitus, which is often resistant to insulin. They may be weak and sleep most of the time. They may develop seizures or other nervous system changes. We recommend two separate treatments to manage the condition if it is a tumour or to support the recovery if the problem has been caused by steroid abuse or by another hormonal/metabolic imbalance. 1. Canine Conditioning Mix described on my website at; http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/dog_conditioning_mix.html is specifically designed to bring the metabolism back into balance and support the normal relationship between all the organs, including the adrenals with the others. A course of this will allow the metabolism to regain balance and redistribute the load between all the various systems. 2. Cushing's Disease Support: http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/dog_cushings_disease.html This mix contains a super antioxidant to assist the immune system in fighting any growth and the auto-immunity to reverse any problems. In addition, I include herbs for the health of the kidneys and adrenals specifically above and beyond those included in the Conditioning Mix. I also recommend that you place your dog on a diet of raw meat and bones i.e. beef/mutton bones with meat on them or raw chicken necks and wings, mince; definitely no processed food and snacks. You can also add some freshly cooked vegetables and rice. If your dog is not already on this type of diet, then I suggest that you introduce it slowly. The following articles discuss dogs' diets and why it is important to keep it natural and simple; http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/articles_digestive_system_ofadog.html http://www.herbal-dogkeeping.com/articles_give_your_dog_abone.html I recommend that you continue with the treatments long-term as it is really a metabolic health tonic and by improving things in this sense your dog's own system is holding the symptoms at bay. This is so much better than just treating the symptoms Equine - Gastrointestinal Ulcers As far as gastrointestinal ulcers are concerned a twelve week course of Slippery Elm Powder and Chamomile Tea is the ideal treatment. 1/3 cup of Slippery Elm powder mixed into a paste once a day and this paste is given directly or added to the horses feed or bran mash. Use enough warm chamomile tea to make it into the paste or if you need to syringe it into his mouth you will need to add more tea to make it into a slurry instead of a paste. To make the Chamomile tea place 2 tablespoons of Chamomile flowers into a jug and pour a litre of boiling water over them. Leave them to steep and cool and then use enough to make your paste or slurry and feed the rest split over morning and evening meals. You will need a syringe with a feeding tip should you have to syringe it in and you may find adding some raw honey will make it more appealing. I sometimes cheat if a horse is not keen initially by spreading the paste between two pieces of bread to make a slippery elm and honey sandwich (usually will need two sandwiches). This will often get them accepting of the taste. Slippery Elm Powder is used to treat ulceration of all mucosal membranes within the body. It will completely reline the affected areas and can be mixed into a paste with chamomile tea to treat scouring in animals by relining the whole of the GIT. Recent Equine testimonial - "Bass and his Stomach Ulcers" I just wanted to write and thank you for all your help and advice that you and your team have given me for my horse Bass who was suffering from stomach ulcers. As you suggested I gave him a 3 month treatment each day of Slippery Elm Bark powder along with the Chamomile and Rosehip tea. Within the first few weeks he was like a different horse. He went from being dull and generally uninterested in me and his pasture buddies to the comical life and soul of the pasture. He is now a happier and more comfortable horse and it shows in his work and general personality. In the last few months he has literally blossomed. Although I felt certain that his ulcers must be gone due to his new happier self, I decided to take him to the vets to get scoped just to be sure!! Much to the surprise of the vet clinic, all 4 of his ulcers are gone and his stomach lining looked in perfect health. Thanks again, I can't tell you how different he is!! Kate - Wisconsin Human - DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) DVT is blood condition relating to circulation and viscosity. There are three main reasons for deep vein thrombosis. About half the sufferers of DVT have no symptoms at all. in the others with inflammation and blood flow obstruction there can be swelling and pain in the calf, also the ankle , foot and thigh depending on the veins affected. To improve this generally I suggest consuming foods with rutin on a regular basis eg lemon, buckwheat and blackcurrant. As well as taking a herbal mix with Rue . Recommendations for DVT :- 1. Drink ¼ squeezed and chopped lemon in hot water with small slices of ginger everyday . Lemon and ginger both improve circulation and make blood travel faster . Twice a day to start with to rebalance blood circulation system. 2. Eat one clove of garlic daily-garlic has favourable influences on cardiac factors 3. Walk daily for 20 minutes. 4. Avoid dehydration. 5. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and fatty foods 6. take omega 3 fatty acids -fish oil, walnuts, olive oil 7. no margarine, processed foods 8. consume cold water fish-, cut down on other animal proteins 9. a happy heart is the best medicine- reduce impatience and anger, try contemplation, meditation. 10. Home Remedies - The Humble Lemon Lemon juice has long been used as a diuretic, diaphoretic, astringent, tonic, lotion, and gargle. Botany :- The lemon tree is an evergreen, growing to over 6 m in height. Its toothed leaves are light green. The citrus fruit (lemon) is small, green to yellow in color, and oval in shape. Unlike other citrus varieties, the lemon tree bears fruit continuously. The plant is cultivated in Mediterranean and subtropical climates worldwide. Lemon has been used in food preparations and the agricultural industry to gel and stabilize foods. Important for its nutritional value, lemon possesses vitamin C, which is necessary to sustain the body's resistance to infection and heal wounds. Lemon also contains antioxidant, anticancer, hydrophilic, and antimicrobial properties. Start every morning with lemon (place 1/4 whole lemon) in hot water.
