Robert McDowell's Herbal Treatments 26 August 2007 Herbal Help for Humans and their Companions"One of the symptoms of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important." ~Bertrand RussellThis week we feature:-
Feline - Squamous Cell Cancer (It is worth looking at our new range of conditions described on the cat site) Squamous cell carcinoma is a cancer of the skin. Exposure to sunlight is one trigger-factor for this cancer and it is seen more commonly in white cats, and cats kept in hot sunny countries. The tumour commonly affects the nose or the ears and can initially look like a small scratch or wound that won't heal. Spread (metastasis) of these tumours is uncommon but local lymph nodes are sometimes affected. Squamous Cell Cancer could therefore be seen as an end result of a systemic and prolonged assault on blood and the immune sytem in general which may never have appeared without late 20th century domestication practices. I prepare a specific SCC Support mixture of concentrated extracts of: Bladderack, Comfrey, Rue, Hypericum, Nettle, Rosehips and Violet Leaves along with appropriate Bach Flower Remedies. This mix is given in conjunction with my Super Antioxidant which is derived from the Maritime Pine and together they have the potential to slow down and reverse the development of SCC and bringing it into remission. These tumors are typically squamous cell carcinomas. Results of studies undertaken into oral cancer in cats suggest that flea control products including flea collars, diet (reliance on tinned, processed foods), and perhaps environmental tobacco smoke might be associated with risk of oral SCC. If any of these scenarios are pertinent to your cat, please remove any flea collar, reduce tinned food and increase raw mince and smoke outside. Our SCC program assists in strengthening the immune system and supports the organs and body systems affected by the disease. The program consists of :Maritime Pine Bark as well. http://www.herbal-treatments.com/cat_maritime_pine_bark_extract_pycnogenol.html Canine - Gum Disease Gum disease in dogs is usually due to poor dental hygiene. The top reason for gum disease is a reliance on tinned dog food and biscuits. We clean our teeth with a toothbrush and the dog cleans its teeth with bones. Gum disease begins with the formation of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms in the mouth at the gum line. Plaque hardens into tartar which harms the gums causing them to become red and swollen (gingivitis). If left untreated, gingivitis will lead to gum and peridontal disease. This can lead to infections of the bone that hold the teeth in place, resulting in loss of bone, which can cause the teeth to fall out. The infection can also travel into the blood and cause further problems. The gums and teeth need to be cleaned by your vet and any diseased teeth removed. You will need to follow up with the raw and natural diet as recommended in previous email. I recommend that you start dosing with Colloidal silver 10mls twice daily to treat the infection with Maritime Pine Bark . Equine - Stringhalt I have wrestled with Stringhalt over the years and there is no a simple answer as to whether the condition is caused by a plant or some sort of deficiency. I tend to believe that it is actually due to a fungal infection that is found on a variety of plants and may in turn be due to something we put on our pastures. While Magnesium is important to healthy nerves and many of the herbs I use to treat the condition nowadays are naturally high in Magnesium, I am not at all sure that an inorganic magnesium supplement helps at all. There are also some suggestions that the condition can be a result of super-phosphate poisoning in susceptible horses. The stringhalt program consists of the Herbs: Comfrey, Dandelion, Mugwort, Pine Bark, Sage, Saw Palmetto, Valerian (all 1:1 extracts except for Dandelion which is in 1:10 Tincture form.) Homeopathic: Magnesium Phosphate tissue salt and from the Bach Flower Range; Rescue Remedy, Heather, Vine, Elm and Vervain. This course is given over a 12 week period and a single dose each day of yoghurt (acidophilus), about a couple of dessertspoons, is given as well. This whole program is a little complex and crazy sounding but over about 8 years of development I have now got a pretty reliable treatment working. I have probably struggled over stringhalt more than any other condition in either man or beast. The mix is to be found on the website at the following link; http://www.herbal-horsekeeping.com/horse_stringhalt_herbal_treatment.html Human - Candida There are many factors to consider when addressing Candida. The Candida yeast organism is normally kept in check by the human immune system. But sometimes, particularly when the immune system is compromised it will multiply rapidly and overwhelm our systems leading to a variety of unpleasant symptoms - collectively known as Candidiasis or yeast infection. Candida is opportunistic. That is, it takes over when mechanisms that usually keep it in check are temporarily weakened. Hormonal changes in the body, as with hormone therapy, pregnancy and the contraceptive pill can trigger a yeast infection in people whose immune systems are under challenge, eg stress. Repeated courses of anti-biotics can also be a trigger. Yeast grows best in a warm, moist environment. This means that tight, poorly ventilated clothes, for example nylon or synthetic fibres, pantyhose, and undergarments without a cotton crotch, may increase your risk of infection. Sweaty gym clothes and wet bathing suits are common culprits as well. Wiping from back to front instead of from front to back after a bowel movement may contaminate the vagina with Candida from the gastrointestinal tract, and could increase the risk for yeast infections. Douching may also disrupt the delicate balance of natural organisms (such as yeast and bacteria) in the vagina and could lead to an infection. And if you already have an infection, douching may make it worse and make it harder for your doctor or healthcare professional to identify the problem. Scented or chemically treated toilet paper and sanitary napkins, feminine deodorants, perfumes, spermicides, harsh soaps, and detergents may irritate the vagina and cause an infection or make an existing one worse. Cadida can also be transmitted via sexual intercourse so your partner may inadvertent;y be reinfecting you even though they may be symptom free. To address Candida please consider all of the above plus dietary changes by excluding a foods containing yeast. This must be adhered to for 12 weeks. There are many websites which will identify all the foods that contain yeast products. Many products have hidden yeast content so research this well. Also reduce all pre prepared foods & any alcoholic or caffeinated or carbonated beverages. drink water & herbal teas avoid fruit juices unless you are squeezing the fruit yourself. O.k. treatment options. Externally start with the Candida douche mix as per link; http://www.altivoe.com/herbs_thrush_vaginitis.html Also the Bloodcleanser as per link attached. http://www.altivoe.com/herbs_blood_cleansing.html Home Remedies - Diarrhea Any problems to do with the gastrointestinal tract can benefit from taking Slippery Elm powder twice daily. I flat teaspoon before breakfast and dinner mixed with either yoghurt or Baby stewed fruit (which you can buy in small jars). Also take 1 teaspoon of psyllium husks daily mixed with porridge or warm water . Psyllium husks are a very soft fibre to create a soft but firm bowel motion. You need to ensure plenty of liquid with these as the husks swell up. Drink Dandelion tea twice daily to support the work of the liver.
