    Coreina's little Chihuahua - Ariel November 20, 2002, Coreina :

Hi, I just found your site and would be so greatful for some advise from your team... I have a 2 pound 10 month old chihuahua puppy whome i love and adore of course..I have been trying to decide whether to spay her, she went through a heat, which was hardly noticable, except my Ariel licking herself often, I have read to spay at a year of age to let her organs develope, but for health benefits to do it then before a second heat, would estrogen not benefit my baby as well, as it does myself? Ariel is inside unless somewhere safe with her mom,the only reason I would spay is I've read the health reasons, my concern is pyometra, or however it is spelled? I've read it is common and would require emergency surgery...I am nervous as she is soo tiny, to put her through such an operation, I want the best for my little girl and it would be so nice to get your advise. Thank you very very much and I look forward to your apply, when time permits..
    Best wishes, Coreina

    Robert replied:

    Dear Coreina

I can see no reason at all for spaying if your dog is not going to be in a situation where she is in danger of an unwanted pregnancy and if her cycle is simple and non problematic in her circumstances.

Anyone who is telling you that leaving her reproductive system intact is posing a risk to her health is ridiculous. There is major risk from infection or death during a spay operation and I would strongly recommend against it. Just let nature take its course.

    Yours truly,
    Robert McDowell

    Coreina replied:

    Dear Robert,

Thank you so much for taking the time, and for caring about my little Chihuahua to give your expert advise about spaying my tiny little daughter...she is so precious to us...I was hoping for positivity about not spaying her, and if you strongly advise against it, there is obviously a big risk and a reason for my being nervous... I just want my angel to stay healthy (and she will), that is why I was thinking of spaying, the things I have read... thank you again, I think it is so wonderful that you give your advise like this, from your love of animals..I sent a picture of Ariel, because she's sooo cute!

I'm happy I found your site and I Wish you and all the animals the very best!

    Coreina
